Fresh violence has broken out in France’s second city Lyon as protests against pension reforms grow more unpredictable.

Police chased rampaging youths as they set fire to cars.

Officers responded with tear gas and arrested 36 people.

As many as 265 people have been taken into police custody since the unrest in the city began last week.

Students are now very much involved in the dispute against government plans to raise the retirement age.

As many as nine universities have been blockaded and five closed across France as public anger continues to grow.
