Chilean president hails ‘miracle’ mine rescue

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has hailed the rescue operation which saved the lives of the 33 miners.

He said it was an evening that would change Chile forever.

“It was a night charged with emotion and full of joy. A night that will forever remain deep in our hearts,” Pinera said in a televised address.

“I believe Chile is not the same country that it was over two months ago. The miners will never be the same either. Those who were trapped on that August 5 day have emerged stronger. Let that be a lesson for all of us.”

Pinera vowed that he will move to change the laws governing worker safety as soon as possible.
