Rescue of Chilean miners gets underway

The first of the 33 trapped Chilean miners was hauled to safety shortly after midnight on Tuesday, local time.
31 year-old Florencio Avalos appeared fit and in good health despite his two month ordeal below ground.

He was shortly followed by his colleague, 40-year-old Mario Sepulveda. Both men had been chosen to be among the first to make the arduous 700 metre journey to freedom due to their strength – just in case something had gone wrong with the hoist.
