Painted in the red, white and blue colours of the Chilean flag, the Phoenix Rescue Capsule was especially designed for this operation and has an oxygen supply.
It also has communications equipment for the rescuers to keep in contact with the miners at all time during the operation.
Named after the mythical bird that rose from its ashes, the Phoenix one capsule weighs approximately 420 kilos and is four metres tall.
It was designed by NASA engineers and the Chilean navy, who made sure every little detail was checked thoroughly, and is equipped with an escape hatch as well as retractable wheels to help it travel up and down the rescue shaft.
