Tributes have poured in from around the world after the death of the operatic legend Joan Sutherland.

Known by her legion of fans as “La Stupenda”, the Australian singer was once described as “ the greatest voice of the century.”

Her career began back in 1951 and spanned some 40 years. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1979.

She died aged 83 at her home in Switzerland after a long illness but her magnificent voice will live on through her numerous acclaimed recordings.
