A British aid worker kidnapped in Afghanistan has been killed during a failed rescue attempt.
Authorities say Linda Norgrove was killed by her captors as US soldiers attempted to free her.
Three Afghan colleagues kidnapped along with Norgrove in the province of Kunar last month are reported to be unharmed.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said: “The responsibility for this tragic outcomes rests squarely with the hostage-takers. From the moment they took her, Linda’s life was in continual and grave danger, and given who held her, and given the intense danger that she faced, we judged
from the beginning that the best hope of securing her safe release was to attempt to rescue her.”
The top US General David Petraeus says NATO and Afghan forces did everything they could to save Linda Norgrove, who worked for a US aid organisation.
