Residents flee new threat from red sludge

Amid the threat of a second spill of toxic red sludge, the Hungarian authorities say they are taking no chances.

They have decided to completely evacuate the town of Kolantar, and other towns may also need to be evacuated later.

Some 800 residents are being shifted to the nearby town of Ajka, where temporary accomodation has been set up.

“We have to stay here,” said one woman. “We have no place to go. Our home is on a hill, so if the mud reaches our home the whole village would be destroyed. All the lower parts of Kolontar are completely lost. That part of Kolantar doesn’t exist.”

The Hungarian Prime Minister visited the evacuees, telling them that the threat to the village was very real.

Hungary declared a state of emergency in the area after the toxic sludge flooded three villages.
