The European Commission is considering the introduction of a 0.1% margin of tolerance when it comes to GMOs in imported animal feed.
This is because at the moment, the slightest trace of banned GMOs in the feed means it has to be sent back to the supplier. Last year, two shipments were returned to the US.
However more than one million EU citizens have already signed a petition calling for a total moratorium on GMO crops in Europe and according to the Lisbon Treaty, this means that the commission has act.
This is the first time that such a petition has been submitted to the Commission and officials now have four months, either to propose legislation, ask for precisions or throw the petition out.
