Amid warnings of an acutely high terror threat in Europe, some European Union ministers have criticised the United States over its communication policy on security.
The US has warned all EU countries over possible imminent attacks, without specifying targets.
Some countries, such as Belgium which has the EU presidency, feel the Americans are being unduly alarmist – and want better communication.
“You must have the possibility to anticipate and to know already before it is in the press what will be in the communication,” said Belgian Interior Minister Annemie Turtelboom.
At a meeting in Luxembourg a senior US official warned that Europe was under a particular threat. Some of its citizens, she said, were returning from the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan, trained in terror and difficult to detect.
This week has seen France warn people to be vigilant on public transport and in tourist areas.
But the Spanish interior minister said he thought the threat in general was the same as it had been for the last few years.
