Rabbis from Jewish settlements have given a box of new Korans to Palestinians in an act of solidarity after Monday’s arson attack on a West Bank Mosque.
Militant settlers have been blamed for the incident in which several copies of the Islamic holy book were scorched.
But the gesture was marred by clashes between Palestinian youths and Israeli soldiers.
Witnesses say the youngsters were prevented by the military from joining a demonstration calling for peaceful coexistence.
The mosque in the village of Beit Fajjar was not only burned but threats in Hebrew were scrawled on the walls.
Any flare-up of violence on the West Bank poses a direct threat to peace talks that were launched just a month ago but suspended by the Palestinians last week when a 10-month Israeli moratorium on new settler construction expired.
