Civilians in Afghan ambush

At least eight civilians and one policeman have been killed in Afghanistan after an attack on a police convoy.

Around 25 people were taken to hospital after several ambushes by insurgents.

Five separate explosions were reported.

Many of the injured had gathered at the scene of the first blast when the second went off.

The attack is the latest in a growing number of incidents in the southern Afghan region of Kandahar.

US-led troops have begun an offensive in the area to drive out insurgents.

In Operation Dragon Strike, Afghan soldiers are now fighting alongside their American counterparts against Taliban militants.

Violence in Afghanistan is at its worst level since 2001, despite the presence of 150,000 foreign troops.
