Opel’s car assembly plant in Antwerp, Belgium, is to close at the end of the year.

Parent company General Motors said it had been unable to find an outside industrial investor to take over the factory and keep it open.

With the closure 1,200 people will lost their jobs at the plant, which built Opel Astra cars and once had 7,000 employees.

The closure is part of GM’s restructuring in Europe.
