South American leaders have held an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Ecuador.
Heads of state from Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Uruguay converged on Buenos Aires to show their support for President Correa, after he was held in a hospital against his will.
“We just had a phone conference with him and the situation in Ecuador is under control,” said Argentina’s PresidentCristina Fernández de Kirchner.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Venezuelan President is blaming an old enemy.
“Behind these groups of police or soldiers are the dark hands of the empire, and political forces on the extreme right in Ecuador and the United States. I’m sure the same thing in Venezuela some years ago,” said Hugo Chavez.
Ordinary South Americans are also supporting
President Correa. Leftists groups gathered outside the meeting in Buenos Aires.
