US envoy tries to save Mideast peace talks

It is an attempt to save the Middle East peace talks. The US envoy to the region George Mitchell has met the Israeli Prime Minister.

The Palestinians are threatening to walk out of the talks unless an Israeli freeze on settlement building in the West Bank is extended.

Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath said: “Mr. Mitchell is here, we are giving him that opportunity, until next week, to the 4th of October. If in this process he is able to somehow get the Israelis to go back to the moratorium and freeze settlements, that would be the happy news. Otherwise there would be really no happy news whatsoever.”

A ten-month moratorium on new housing construction in Israeli settlements in the West Bank expired on Monday.

So far the Israeli government has been resisting calls to extend the freeze.
