British Airways, American Airlines and Spain’s Iberia have signed off on a long-awaited strategic and revenue sharing alliance to be launched in October.

Under the agreement they will cooperate on flights between Europe and North America.

BA is in the process of merging with Iberia.

There has been a wave of consolidation among airlines in the face of mounting competition from low-cost carriers.

Analysts said American Airlines needs tie-ups if it is to remain competitive amid a wave of mergers in its home market.
