Israel blocks Gaza bound aid ship

Israeli forces have intercepted an aid ship carrying nine Jewish activists bound for the Gaza Strip.

According to the Israeli military, they encountered no resistance as they took control of the vessel, known as the Irene, and escorted it to shore.

The incident comes four months after a deadly Israeli raid on an international flotilla, in which nine Turkish activists were killed in clashes with naval commandos.

The Irene, like the earlier flotilla, had been trying to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza.

The passengers on board, including a former Israeli fighter pilot, had said they wanted to show that not all Israelis support the blockade.

The vessel’s cargo, including medicines, toys and water purifiers, is expected to be transferred into Gaza.
