German govt backs longer use of nuclear power

Protesters have been voicing their anger in Berlin over the extension of Germany’s use of nuclear power.

The government has today approved a plan to extend the life of nuclear power plants, overturning a previous government’s decision.

Greenpeace has been one of the groups organising demonstrations against the change of strategy.

Experts say extending the life of Germany’s 17 nuclear power plants will give the government billions of euros of additional income.

But they warn it could be left with a hefty bill for the disposing of nuclear waste in years to come.
