Pirates have freed 12 Ukrainian crew members of a ship taken hostage off the coast of Somalia on Saturday.

The Greek-operated cargo ship was seized in the Gulf of Aden having left Egypt with its load of cables and steel bars. Its original destination had been Mauritius.

It was released on Sunday night, with all 12 crew members safe and sound.

Officials had had no news of the ship since it launched a distress call early on Saturday.
