Reports from Japan say a Chinese fishing boat captain, whose arrest sparked the most serious diplomatic row between the countries in years, is being freed.

Zhan Qixiong had been accused of deliberately ramming two Japanese coast guard ships in disputed waters in the East China sea.

China has been demanding his immediate and unconditional release.

The arrest followed the detention of four Japanese nationals by Chinese authorities on suspicion of illegally entering a military zone.

Earlier today Japan warned that the row could hurt Asia’s two biggest economies.
