Israeli police have entered the al-Aqsa mosque compound to quell violence after the killing of a Palestinian man by an Israeli security guard.

The victim was allegedly shot dead after a patrol car was blocked and stoned by dozens of Palestinians in the Silwan area of east Jerusalem.

Two other Palestinians were hurt when police opened fire. Israel is promising a full investigation.

Silwan has been the scene of frequent clashes over its Jewish settler enclave.

Last month there was unrest when settlers reportedly tried to cross the courtyard of a mosque to reach an ancient spring.
