Police probe woman's motive for killing spree

As police in Germany investigate yesterday’s shooting spree in which four people were killed, an amateur video shows events unfolding as a woman ran amok with a gun and a knife.

“She’s got a machine gun,” says one man in the street, while smoke billows from a block of flats opposite. Police believe the killing began before an explosion and fire ripped through the building.

Inside, police later found the bodies of the woman’s estranged husband and the couple’s five-year-old son.

A male nurse was also killed and a policeman seriously injured a policeman before the woman was shot dead.

“This tragic crime had four human beings as victims,” said Heribert Rech, state Interior Minister in Baden-Württemberg. “One of them was the aggressor. The tragedy for me is, that there is a five-year-old child among the victims.”

Police say the woman was a 41-year-old lawyer. Her son and his father had been visiting her flat at Loerrach close to the French and Swiss borders. Her motive for the attack is unclear.

Last week the trial began of a father accused of breaking gun laws after his teenage son used his weapon to kill 16 people including himself at a school.
