The French Department of Gers, a source of the delicacy ‘foie gras’, is proceeding with a legal case against the European Commission, over genetically modified organisms. The Gers wants the EU’s Court of Justice to annul the Commission’s decision – taken over the summer – to authorise the sale in the EU of six kinds of genetically modified maize.
This case clashes with a pledge by Europe’s health and consumer Commissioner John Dalli to continue approving genetically modified (GM) crops. Dalli’s aim is to unblock EU GM approvals.
The Commission proposed in July an EU rule change which would let each country decide whether to grow GMs or ban them. This is coming up for debate among the EU ministers in the coming days.
Dalli, who has called for “responsible innovation”, in February approved the GM “Amflora” potato by Germany’s BASF for cultivation. He said he was upset that the company recently contaminated a field of Amflora potatoes in Sweden with an unapproved genetically modified potato variety known as “Amadea”.
