A frenzied shooting in a small German town has left four people dead and one police officer wounded.
The first shots were fired after an explosion set fire to an apartment at around six o’clock on Sunday evening. A woman armed with an automatic weapon was then seen running from the building into a nearby hospital. Police say she went into the gynaecological unit and opened fire, killing a male nurse and wounding a policeman. Armed police then arrived and shot the woman dead.
The bodies of a man and a toddler were later found with gunshot wounds in the apartment where the original explosion happened. It was soon announced they were the woman’s child and her former partner. Her motive remains unclear.
The shooting took place in the small town of Lörrach, near Germany’s borders with France and Switzerland.
It puts the issue of gun control firmly back in the headlines.
In March last year, a teenager used his father’s gun to shoot dead 15 people at his old school in the town of Winnenden. He then shot himself. The boy’s father went on trial last week charged with failing to keep his weapon secure.
