Foreign workers flock to French grape harvest

The grape harvest is underway and, this year, there has been no trouble finding pickers.

Unemployment in Spain, Portugal and Eastern Europe means there has been no shortage of people looking for seasonal work in France. But many say conditions are not what they once were:

“There is a crisis in the building industry so we have to resort to picking. But this is finished as well. They don’t pay like they should. It is not worth it,” said one man.

Some workers have reportedly come from as far away as Equatorial Africa.

French officials are warning employers to make sure they fill in the corresponding paperwork as they may be held responsible if workers are found to be operating illegally.
