An influential Pakistani politician has been stabbed to death outside his home in London. Police say Imran Farooq had multiple head wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
He had sought asylum in the UK in 1999 after seven years on the run from Pakistani authorities, who accused him of involvement in several crimes including murder – charges he denied.
He was one of the leaders of the MQM party, the longtime dominant force in Pakistan’s biggest city Karachi.
News of his death there has been greeted with grief and anger.
There were scores of deaths in the city last month after another MQM member was murdered.
The government blamed the Taliban for that killing.
