Al Attiya nibbles away at Sainz's Silkway lead

Nasser Al Attiyah won stage six of the Silkway Rally in Russia on Thursday to close the gap on overall leader Carlos Sainz, the man that pipped him to the 2010 Dakar title in January.

It was the Qatari driver’s first stage win in this years edition and his victory moved him to within 12 minutes and 48 second of ‘El matador’ Sainz.

Despite struggling on the day defending champion Sainz managed a third place finish after the 394 kilometre special Astrakhan to Elista.

There was a major upset in the truck category after russian pace setters Vladimir Chagin and Firdaus Kabirov both made navigational errors paving the way for Eduard Nikolaev to claim his second stage win and take the overall race lead.
