French nuclear company Areva says two of its workers are among seven people kidnapped in northern Niger.

Five french nationals were seized this morning in Arlit, where Areva has a uranium mine.

A worker from Togo and another from Madagascar were also taken.

As recently as the end of August, France’s Foreign Ministry upped its security level after threats from Al Qaeda’s north african wing.

Spokesman Bernard Valero said it has been difficult to assess the risk as the threats were so vague.

France has declared itself at war with al Qaeda’s north african wing after Islamist extremists said in July that they had executed 78-year-old humanitarian worker Michel Germaneau.
