Burning tyres on the road and port workers demonstrating have delayed the opening of the first Motorway of the Sea, a European project to take freight transport off the roads.
French Transport minister Dominique Bussereau was scheduled to open the project, along with his Spanish counterpart, which will operate between between Nantes/St. Nazaire and Gijon in Northern Spain.
A hanging effigy of the French President summed up their anger.
Ferries have already had test runs on the route and the demonstrators stressed they are not against the so called Motorways of the Sea or reform of the French ports.
Their anger they say is against what they claim are job losses due to government policy and the failure of the transport minister to take into consideration the toughness of their job and their retirement age.
