Clinton meets Abbas over peace talks

world news

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has met Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas with no resolution in sight for the region’s revived peace process.

Abbas says he will walk away from the talks unless Israel renews a freeze on settlement building in the disputed West Bank territory.

The ban is set to expire at the end of this month and there are fears the disagreement could sink the current negotiations.

Meanwhile, Israel bombed the Gaza Strip in what it says is a response to rockets and mortars fired by Hamas militants.

The airstrike close to the town of Rafah killed one Palestinian, witnesses said.

Israel’s military offensive on Gaza in December 2008 led to the collapse of the last round of direct peace talks with the Palestinians.
