EU: French Roma expulsions 'outrageous disgrace'

The deportation of Roma migrants from France has been described as a disgrace and an outrage. Nearly 230 people were expelled yesterday alone, taking the total above a thousand. EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding told Euronews that it’s a scandal, and she wants legal action against France.

“We can not do what was done by the Nazis and simply stigmatise a group of human beings; this is unacceptable and I say ‘Stop.’”

“Any country which breaks European law will have a problem with the Commission. A big country, and small country, any country.”

“I find it scandalous that members of the government have been telling me things which aren’t true and that, at the same time, there are memos contradicting what Brussels was told.”

A leaked French government memo suggests the Roma had been specifically targetted. However, French ministers had assured Brussels that people were treated on a case-by-case basis.
