Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas held on Tuesday what US envoy George Mitchell called “serious discussions” on the issues to be resolved to achieve a Middle East peace deal.

Mitchell told reporters in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh that Netanyahu and Abbas held one and a half hours of direct talks amid the forthcoming expiry of a freeze on Israeli settlement building in the West Bank.

The Palestinians have threatened to walk away from the negotiations if the freeze is not extended at the end of this month.
