France bans full-face Muslim veil in public

world news

| |

The French parliament has fully backed a ban on full-face Muslim veils being worn in public.

Overwhelming support in the Senate followed approval in the lower house in July.

The bill is not formally aimed at Islam. It simply targets the face being covered in public. But many
Muslims have protested that their religion is being stigmatised.

Barring a legal challenge, the ban is set to come into force in Spring next year.
