Israeli shelling has killed at least three Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to medical workers and witnesses. The dead reportedly include a 91-year-old man and his teenage grandson.
Hamas security and medical officials said those killed were farmers from Beit Hanoun near the Gaza-Israel border.
An Israeli military spokesman said soldiers shot at a group trying to fire a rocket-propelled grenade at them. The shelling followed fresh missile fire into Israel from the Hamas-ruled territory. No-one was hurt in the attack which the Palestinian militant group The Popular Resistance Committees claims it carried out. Rocket fire from Gaza has increased in the past week following the resumption of direct peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators.
