Mourners mark 9/11 attacks in New York

Remembering the September 11 attacks nine years on. Vice president Joe Biden and New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined thousands of mourners at the site of the World Trade centre for this year’s commemorations

Despite nearly a decade passing the emotion, especially for the loved ones of the victims has not diminished. But, controversy has overshadowed this year’s events.

The threat to burn copies of the Quran by a Florida pastor and the planned building of Islamic cultural centre just two blocks from where the twin towers stood have been deeply divisive.

Silence, however, and the bell to mark the moment the second plane came crashing into south tower, and like every year now the names of the near 2750 people who perished in the World Trade centre attacks.
