Clashes in Kosovo after Serbia lose basketball match

EU police in Kosovo are on high alert after clashes between ethnic Albanians and Serbs in the divided city of Mitrovica.

Fighting erupted late on Saturday night after Albanians started celebrating Turkey’s victory over Serbia in the semi finals of the World basketball championships.

One French gendarme was treated for a gunshot wound in the leg as special police units sought to separate the two sides as they pelted each other with stones at the foot of a bridge that splits the city in two.

Since Mitrovica was divided eleven years ago countless efforts have largely failed to ease simmering tensions.

However, both sides are braced for EU facilitated talks that were called upon in a UN resolution passed on Thursday.
