Obama urges "religious tolerance"

The US President has again called on the maverick Florida pastor Terry Jones to drop his Koran-burning plan, saying such an act could deeply harm the US abroad.

He warns that it would also endanger American troops.

He added: “I think it is absolutely important now for the overwhelming majority of the American people to hang onto that thing that is best in us, a belief in religious tolerance, clarity about who our enemies are.”

Afghanistan is one of the country’s where thousands have turned out to protest against the plan dreamed up by the obscure pastor.

One person’s been shot dead at a protest in northern Afghanistan.
