The Muslim world has hit out at a US-based Christian pastor’s plans to burn copies of the Koran.
Terry Jones, a Florida minister, had planned to hold the event on the anniversary of 9/11 this Saturday.
He initially cancelled the ceremony.before backtracking and saying it was only “on hold” because he was “lied to” over a deal to move an Islamic centre in New York.
Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono
called the idea “deplorable” and “despicable.”
Afghanistan’s president Hamid Karzai warned the stunt would damage America’s relationship with the Islamic world.
But the US government is powerless to stop Jones: the country’s constitution guarantees freedom of speech if some find its content offensive.
Jones wanted to protest against the planned Islamic Cultural Centre, near where the Twin Towers once stood.
It is the site of the terror attacks nine years ago, which killed three thousand people.
The so-called Ground Zero mosque would house a swimming pool, basketball court and a Muslim prayer room.
