Greek PM to give economic progress report

The Greek Prime Minister is hoping to calm tension over his austerity drive with a keynote speech today on the state of the economy.

George Papandreou is holding a cabinet meeting in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, just days after a government reshuffle.

Ironically, police officers expected to monitor weekend anti-government demonstrations held their own protest against the austerity measures.

There have also been demonstrations by firemen and coastguard personnel.

Thousands of protesters are converging on the northern city to express anger over cuts aimed at reducing the country’s deficit and public debt.
