Moldova prepares poll to end political impasse

Moldova holds a referendum today which is expected to pave the way to direct presidential elections and end a long running political impasse.

A breakdown of parties in parliament has seen three attempts to elect a president fail over the past 18 months – a block that has paralysed reform in the European Union aspirant.

Today’s poll asks people if the president should be elected by popular vote – and opinion appears divided over the outcome.

If, as expected, people vote in favour of the change, direct elections for both president and parliament will take place on November 14.
