No sign of oil spill after platform fire

Thirteen workers have been safely rescued after an explosion on board an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico.

The blast caused a fire but no oil spill, much to the relief of those still dealing with the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in April.

Coast Guard Captain Peter Troedsson said: “Coast Guard helicopters on scene and vessels on scene have no reports of a visible sheen in the water. There is no report of an evidence of leaks but we continue to investigate and to monitor that situation to make sure that doesn’t change.”

The BP disaster in April claimed 11 lives and caused the world’s worst offshore oil spill.

This latest accident did not involve an oil well and the platform was not in active production.
