Violence in Middle East as peace talks begin

In the West Bank, two civilians were wounded in a shooting by suspected Palestinian gunmen.

The incident came 24 hours after the killing of four settlers by Hamas militants. Hamas is opposed to the new negotiations and has vowed to carry out more violence.

The killings were the deadliest attack on Israelis in the West Bank in four years.

And, in the West Bank, Jewish settlers responded to the killings by resuming construction work. Many said the shootings are proof of the need to continue building. The future of these settlements is one of the thorniest issues in the negotiations. The Israelis had suspended all building work on the settlements.

And in Gaza and Ramallah there were demonstrations as Palestinians took to the streets to show their opposition to the talks. The protests and the shootings are seen by many as a direct challenge to the authority of the Palestinian President.
