Slovak police search for gunman’s motive

Police in Slovakia are trying to discover why a man went on the rampage in the capital, killing seven people and wounding 15 others.
Six of the victims were members of the same Roma family.

The suspected gunman, who was caught on camera before turning the gun on himself, is thought to have been a Slovak, aged about 50. His identity is still being investigated.

Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniel Lipsic said: “So far, we don’t know the motive, as I have said, so I will not speculate whether it did or did not have a racial motive. I doubt it, but of course the investigation is on going.”

There have been disputes in Slovakia in the past between Roma and the majority population and there have also been shootings involving criminal gangs.

But some of those who died and were injured yesterday may merely have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
