German banker rebuffs quit calls over race row

German central banker Thilo Sarrazin refused to back down on Monday over his claims that Muslims cannot integrate into western societies and “all Jews share the same gene.”

He made the comments in his book ‘Germany is self destructing’.

The 65-year-old’s book has sparked outrage amongst Germany’s Jewish and Muslim communities.

Chancellor Angela Merkel called Sarrazin’s remarks “completely unacceptable”.

The Bundesbank distanced itself from his comments but for the moment have taken no action.

Sarrazin can only be sacked if he is found to have breached the bank’s code of ethics.
