A close friend of the man who abducted Natascha Kampusch has been cleared by Austrian judges of helping the kidnapper evade justice.
The man, known only as Ernst H, picked up Wolfgang Priklopil by car and listened to the his confession while driving around Vienna.
Prosecutors said his frequent changes of location made it impossible for police to find the girl’s kidnapper.
Prikopil killed himself later that day after Kampusch managed to escape from the underground dungeon in his house.
Austrian media have also speculated that Ernst H helped to build the cell where Kampusch spent eight-and-a-half years but investigators found no evidence to prove such claims.
Kampusch was snatched on her way to school as a ten-year-old in 1998.
Now 22, she plans to publish her autobiography later this year.
