Seven people have been killed and 14 people wounded by a gunman in the Slovak capital Bratislava. Six of the victims were from the same Roma family.
Confusion reigned from mid-morning in the city’s western suburb of Davinska Nova after the killer, armed with a submachine gun, eight clips of ammunition and two pistols entered a flat and shot dead four women and a man inside.
He then shot a family relative before police cornered him, and he tried to shoot his way free. The seventh victim was hit by a stray bullet in a nearby flat.
“He was alone, he fired at everything that moved during his escape bid. The police surrounded him and made it impossible for him to escape,” said police President Jaroslav Spisiak.
In the process he shot a police officer in the head, and a three year-old girl. He eventually killed himself. Nine of the wounded required hospital treatment, one of whom has multiple gunshot wounds in the stomach. Doctors say none of their lives are in danger.
