Libya’s controversial leader Muammar Gaddafi is to meet Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi today on his two day visit to the country.
Along with criticism levelled at Tripoli’s growing influence in the Italian economy, Gaddafi has also attracted much curiosity.
While the Libyan leader is known to travel with his own tent on foreign visits – this time he has also addressed an invited audience of hundreds of young women about the merits of Islam.
Hostess Michela said: “It was a really beautiful meeting and went very well. He is very easy going and he gave us a copy of the Koran. Three girls converted to Islam during the ceremony. It was a beautiful event.”
But opposition politicians are not so pleased. They have attacked their prime minister for his close relationship with Gaddafi in particular over Libya’s six per cent stake in one of Italy’s biggest banking groups.
