Mother and baby critical after doctors' brawl in Sicily

A first-time mother and her baby son are in a serious condition in an Italian hospital after a brawl between doctors led to an hour’s delay in treatment.

30-year-old Laura Salpetrio was rushed to the maternity clinic in Sicily when her waters broke – but as she waited for treatment, the gynaecologist argued with another doctor over whether to perform a Caesarian.

“They knew at half seven in the morning that something was wrong,” said Laura’s husband Matteo,“but they didn’t do anything until 9 o’clock. My wife was really sick, she had been vomiting and having convulsions.”

A Caesarian was eventually done – but complications set in. Laura had to have a hysterectomy, while staff can’t out brain damage to the baby as a result of the delay.

Officials say both doctors have been suspended from the Polyclinic Hospital in Messina while an investigation is carried out. They have also been questioned by police.

The latest figures available show that Italy, at 40%, has the highest number of Caesarian section births in Europe.
