French feminists and protesters have rallied in Paris in support of an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning.
The case of 43 year-old mother of two Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani has sparked international outrage after she was found guilty of adultery.
Tehran insists the furore is being deliberately stoked by the West to damage it.
In the French capital, however, there was little sympathy for that point of view.
French-Jewish writer Marek Halter said: ‘‘For me women are a thermometer of humanity, of human kind. We can say to all the world’s leaders without doubt. show me how you treat your women in your country and you will show who you are.’‘
‘‘I’m here because I consider it really unjust and awful. I don’t understand how this can exist today.’‘
For the moment Iran has suspended the stoning of Ashtiani pending review. That could see the death sentence commuted to life in prison.
