Spain swelters in summer sun

Spain is sweltering in one of its hottest Augusts in recent years with temperatures reaching 42 degrees Celsius.

While some are content to soak up the summer sun many in southern parts of Spain have sought shelter indoors leaving tourist hotspots deserted.

Weather experts said the heatwave could last a full week.

A total of 17 provinces have been affected, with three areas in the south-east of the country on red-alert – Valencia, Alicante and Murcia.

Despite the stifling heat many people continue to make the most of the summer by heading to the beach or simply cooling off in convenient fountains.

Temperatures are expected to reach their highest over the weekend.
