No jail for HIV German pop star

A German pop star has been handed a two-year suspended sentence for infecting a former lover with the HIV virus, while keeping her own HIV status a secret.

Nadja Benaissa, a member of the girl band No Angels, was found guilty of causing bodily harm to one man, and two cases of attempted bodily harm.

Benassia said she became aware of her condition in 1999 after a routine blood test while pregnant at the age of 17.

The judge said her full confession and expression of regret were the main reasons for the court’s leniency.

The performer must also carry out 300 hours of community service.
